Description
Youthful Truzoroeva of St. Petersburg carte de visite photograph as Valentine in Les Huguenots.Ermelenko-Yuzhina (1881-1937) was one of the most important Russian sopranos prior to the Revolution, she initially studied in Kiev and then at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. The soprano then went to Paris and studied with composer Paul Vidal and then in Italy making her stage debut at the Imperial opera in St. Petersburg in 1900. From 1901 to 1906 she was a principal soprano at the
Mariinsky Theater
. She then went to Moscow as a principal with the Bolshoi until 1910. The soprano also sung at the Zimin private opera from 1908-1910. She returned in 1910 to 1913 at the Mariinsky. From 1913 she was a principal soprano of the
Bolshoi in Moscow and from 1915 until she left Russia in 1924 she was back at the Mariinsky and also sung at the Bolshoi in 1916 and 1919. The soprano also gave many concerts throughout Russia and also in Milan at La Scala in 1906 and with her tenor husband David Yuzin in 1907. The pair were also in South America in 1907, Paris in 1907 and 1912 and also participated in Diaghilev's Parisian opera season in 1908. She sung the role of Marina in 1910 performances in Brussels of "Boris Godunov". In 1917 she performed in opera at Covent Garden and throughout the major houses of Italy. In 1921 and 1922 she toured Germany, Spain as well in 1922, France in 1923 as well as the United States. She initially played ball with the
Bolsheviks giving concerts for the troops during World War I.
After the death of her husband in 1923 she left Russia for France, where she lived for the rest of her life. She performed from time to time in Prince Alexey Tsereteli's opera seasons at the Paris Opera and with several other companies. She also gave concerts. Ermolenko also recorded some 60 sides.
